We expect a specific effect when we pay for a beauty treatment. Lip tattoos, especially permanent lip tattoos, are an opportunity to make your face more expressive and eliminate the need for hours of daily makeup for an extended period. However, many professional tattoo artists still do not guarantee the durability of the ink used for permanent lip makeup.
This often occurs for various reasons, with the inexperience of the tattoo artist being a primary factor.
Features of permanent makeup
Permanent lip makeup, more than just regular lipsticks, is a delicate tattoo ink procedure with a gradual introduction and a soft pigment spreading. There are many techniques and types of tattoos, but we stick to the one that creates the most natural effect – the watercolour technique. No one but you will know you’ve had a cosmetic lip tattoo. The procedure goes like this:
- The master first examines the face and lips to understand the natural structure and skin type. This is crucial to avoid an unnatural “application” effect.
- An anamnesis is then collected. Perhaps you have already had a permanent lip tattoo or undergone lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid injections. These details, along with any contraindications, must be clarified. For instance, we recommend postponing tattooing during pregnancy, ensuring the woman avoids discomfort during a sensitive period.
- A sketch is drawn and agreed upon. It is adjusted and approved by you. This ensures you know the expected appearance of the tattoo.
- We then proceed with the introduction of the tattoo pigment. The watercolour technique we employ gives a natural effect. It’s almost impossible to detect the permanent lip tattoo even up close. The result resembles naturally plump and attractive lips.
- During the tattoo ink application, we use anesthetic if needed. However, most find the process bearable. Post-procedure, healing won’t require expensive products. Moisturizing with petroleum jelly or similar cosmetics will suffice.
The healing process lasts about a week. Discomfort is minimal, perhaps just a feeling of slight dryness. There may be some swelling in the first 24 hours, but it’s typically unnoticeable and doesn’t impede your daily activities. Avoid kissing for the first day or two. The crusts will shed around the fifth day, causing no distress.
A month later, a return visit for correction is essential. The tattoo artist needs to ascertain how the tattoo pigment is settling. It’s highly individualistic, making predictions challenging. A sentence ensures natural colour and long-lasting permanent makeup.
What determines the durability
The results will vary depending on several factors if you analyze how much lip tattooing lasts. Among them are the following:
- The age of the client. The younger, the shorter the term and vice versa. This is because youthful skin is very actively renewed and regenerated. On the one hand – good girls always look great. On the other hand, any interventions can be problematic. That is why we do not recommend making it permanent before age 18. There are no special prohibitions and contraindications, but you should remember that tattooing will hold much worse.
- Skin type. Dry can retain pigment for up to five years, virtually unchanged. On standard permanent goes faster. But oily skin removes the colour at a high rate. Therefore, we do not give a final prediction on the result before correction. After it, the master already understands what exactly you have a period of withdrawal of paint, whether it is necessary to add pigment.
- Proper care. The crusts must never be peeled off. The consequences can be unpleasant – from increased colour removal to the appearance of wounds and scars. With the help of crusts, the body gets rid of foreign matter, but you want bright and expressive lips.
- Timely correction. If you do not make an additional procedure in a month, the persistence of pigment on the lips can be significantly reduced. Therefore, do not neglect correction. This is not a whim of the master of permanent tattoos but an essential procedure stage.
Additional factors also influence: for example, whether you have had lip augmentation with fillers.
What is the duration of lip tattooing?
For many reasons, the statistics of how long lip permanence lasts cannot be unambiguous. However, there is a range:
- minimum – one and a half years; this applies to young, very oily skin with active regeneration and rapid cell renewal;
- an average of two years for normal skin;
- up to a maximum of three to five years, such cases are not uncommon.

How often permanent lip makeup can be done
It is impossible to predict in advance how long the procedure will last. Therefore, it is advisable to monitor the condition of the lips yourself. Over time, the colour will fade and become less expressive. Then it is possible and even necessary if you update the permanent makeup and do not have contraindications to make permanent tattoos disappear.
Tattoos on the body last a long time, almost a lifetime. But lips are a delicate area. Our masters, choosing unobtrusive watercolour makeup techniques, inject paint only into the uppermost layers. This excludes any problems with healing – deep crusts, painful sensations. And also makes the output of the permanent softer.
Over time, the paint will lighten. You will not immediately notice these changes because the lips will remain natural. No blue, green or other “scary” colours. The decision to refresh is made when your lips become too pale,
Factors to consider for long-lasting lip tattoos
Various factors affect how long permanent tattooing will last and how it will look after a month, two, a year, or five years. Orient on such:
- the skill of the master – the more experienced the specialist, the more qualitative and stable the effect;
- materials – good pigment is long-lasting, does not gather in lumps, and does not come out in orange or green;
- Technique – the more natural tattoo in the beginning, the more beautiful it looks over time, even when it begins to fade.
